Misoprostol Stevens Johnson SyndromeMisoprostol, also known as Cytotec, has joined the list of possible medications that can cause Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS), a rare skin disease that can develop into the deadly Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN).

Used to protect the lining of the stomach, Cytotec has been hailed as one of the favored ulcer medications physicians recommend to their patients, particularly those at high risk of ulcers when taking anti-inflammatory medication, like Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Pregnant women are also often prescribed misoprostol within the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.

However, misoprostol is beginning to be a hot topic of debate as questions surround the ulcer medication and whether it can cause Stevens Johnson Syndrome.

Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a rare skin disease that can cause up to 30 percent of the patient’s skin to burn and blister. After 30 percent of the skin has been affected, it can evolve beyond SJS and turn into TEN. With TEN, the entire skin of the patient can be overcome with blisters, burns, and rashes, as the skin literally begins to fall off the patient’s body. The patient may go blind as a result of it spreading to other organs. Most victims of SJS are treated in the burn unit of hospitals.

According to eHealthMe, of the 4,698 patients using misoprostol studied, only nine, all of whom were women, had developed Stevens Johnson Syndrome. It should also be noted that the age of the patients who contracted Stevens Johnson syndrome were mainly women aged 60 and over.

NetDoctorUK warns its users of the risk of Stevens Johnson Syndrome. According to their website, “NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) may cause serious blistering or peeling skin reactions (eg Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, exfoliative dermatitis).” It is important to note that this condition is extremely rare – less than 1 percent of patients – but symptoms are likely to occur only within the first month of taking misoprostol. It is advised that all patients consult their physician immediately if they notice rashes or sores inside their mouth.

According to Medfacts.com, between January 2001 and October 2012, 3,444 individuals taking misoprostol filed drug adverse action event reports. Of those 3,444 individuals reporting, only 1 was reportedly diagnosed with SJS after taking misoprostol. Though miniscule, any possible side effects must be disclosed fully and clearly on labels under health safety regulations.

Pfizer Inc., the maker of misoprostol, is facing increased pressure to change its labeling on misoprostol to reflect the risks of developing SJS or TEN.

In general, SJS lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
