viagra-bottles-melanomaA study published in the prestigious medical publication The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has found an increased risk of developing melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer associated with the use of Viagra.

The study’s lead authors are careful to avoid overstating their case. Accord to the Viagra melanoma study, the study does not prove cause and effect, according to the scientific principal that “correlation does not imply causation.” This means that just because two things follow a similar pattern, they are not necessarily related, and that further study is required to more strongly make this assertion. However, the study’s authors assert that the study warrants further research on the subject.

Additionally, the authors of the Viagra melanoma study did find other pieces of evidence that seem to fit in with the idea that Viagra side effects could include melanoma. It is known that the drug can interfere with the production of several chemicals the body produces to prevent cancer. On top of this, the study controlled for, or statistically tested, the idea that erectile dysfunction patients have a higher risk of melanoma to begin with and found no statistically significant evidence of this idea.

Researchers also compared the risk of other skin cancers to Viagra use and found that patients taking the drug did not have a higher risk of other types of skin cancer, which could add further credibility to the idea that Viagra increases the risk of melanoma. This makes sense because melanoma is distinctive from other types of skin cancer in several ways.

A class action lawsuit investigation has been launched to explore the possibility of legal action against the makers of Viagra. A lawsuit against the makers of the drug could allege that drug companies were aware — or reasonably should have been aware — of the risk of melanoma allegedly linked to the drug. Under U.S. law, drug manufacturers have a legally-binding obligation to monitor the market for signs of dangerous side effects. This is because the initial clinical trials of a drug, even if they include thousands of individuals, might not get a representative sample of the population.

But once a drug hits the market, millions of people may use that drug. When so many people use a drug, side effects can become  easier to detect. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) maintains several systems, including the Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS) to collect reports of complications. Drug companies are require to monitor AERS and medical journals like JAMA for signs of problems with their drugs, and to warn the public when such signs are found. Failure to do so could make a company vulnerable to drug lawsuits.

In general, Viagra melanoma lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
