According to recent medical reports, more than 50,000 women within the United States are pursuing vaginal mesh lawsuits against medical device manufacturers, alleging that they experienced painful and damaging vaginal mesh side effects from the implantation of a vaginal mesh device as a treatment for pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence.
Some of the injury claims associated with vaginal mesh lawsuits include erosion of the transvaginal mesh and subsequent pain and infection and others have reported permanent injuries allegedly caused by the vaginal mesh medical device.
A group of researchers based out of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) reviewed medical data collected from 214 women who were required to undergo additional surgery to remove the vaginal mesh due to serious complications.
The status of these women were followed by UCLA researchers for three years after the surgery and it was discovered that about a third of these female patients continuously suffered pain. Half of the women felt pain during sexual intercourse even three years after the vaginal mesh removal surgery and close to another third of the women continued to suffer from incontinence on a daily basis.
This study is not yet complete and it is estimated that this study only represents a small fraction of the possible amount of women affected by the initial implantation and required removal of vaginal mesh medical devices.
Because of the extreme pain, complications, and decreased enjoyment and quality of life experience by women who had a vaginal mesh device implanted to treat a prolapse condition, many female consumers are pursuing vaginal mesh lawsuits or joining vaginal mesh class action lawsuits against the medical device companies who originally produced the surgical mesh.
Background on Vaginal Mesh
Vaginal mesh or transvaginal mesh systems are medical devices used to treat pelvic organ prolapse. This surgical mesh is manufactured from porous synthetic material or alternatively from biological material and implanted in the body to repair damaged tissue resulting from stress urinary incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse conditions. Vaginal mesh devices are also used to lift the bladder in cases of urinary incontinence.
Until a few years ago, vaginal mesh devices were considered a relatively safe and effective medical device. However, in July 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a Public Health Notification warning consumers of the dangers allegedly associated with the use of vaginal or transvaginal mesh.
According to the FDA report, “over the past three years, FDA has received over 1,000 reports from nine surgical mesh manufacturers of complications that were associated with surgical mesh devices used to repair POP and SUI. These mesh devices are usually placed transvaginally utilizing tools for minimally invasive placement.”
Some vaginal mesh side effects consumers may experience include:
- Pain during intercourse
- Urinary issues
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Scarring in the vaginal area
- Perforated bowels, bladder, and/or blood vessels
- Erosion of mesh into the vagina
- Infection
- Various organ injuries
A number of these vaginal mesh side effects require additionally surgeries and treatments to address these complications, which may include vaginal mesh removal surgery, IV therapy, blood transfusions, and surgical draining of abscesses and hematomas.
Thousands of women across the country have filed vaginal mesh lawsuits or have joined vaginal mesh class action lawsuits for allegedly sustaining injury and damages after being implanted with a transvaginal mesh implant, bladder sling, vaginal sling, or other types of vaginal mesh medical devices to treat a pelvic organ prolapse condition.
In general, vaginal mesh lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
