Johnson & Johnson

Johnson & Johnson is engaged in a legal battle to fend off a baby powder cancer lawsuit that alleges the company’s talcum powder products can cause ovarian cancer.

Plaintiff Barbara Mihalich filed her baby powder cancer lawsuit on May 23 in the U.S. District Court of Southern Illinois, and is currently seeking class action status on behalf or herself and other women in Illinois who bought the defendant’s baby powder. The baby powder lawsuit claims that the plaintiff and other women were not informed of the risk of developing cancer if the powder is used in the genital area at the time they bought the product.

Johnson & Johnson, whose baby powder has been popular for decades, became the target of baby powder cancer lawsuits after it was discovered that talcum particles can enter a woman’s uterus when the product is applied to the genital area.

Mihalich, who does not have cancer, also has not indicated that she has used Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder on her genital area. That issue is at the heart of the company’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit.

Overview of Baby Powder Ovarian Cancer Lawsuit

The first baby powder cancer lawsuit Johnson & Johnson had to face at trial was in 2013. The plaintiff accused the company of failing to warn her and other consumers about the potential dangers they could face while using the product, especially when using it for personal hygiene purposes.

Since then, numerous lawsuits have been filed against the company, alleging similar injuries caused by the talcum-based baby powder and Shower-to-Shower powder.  Lawsuits allege that the company had known about this danger for decades, but chose not to warn the public.

In general, talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
