Carrington Farms Coconut OilCarrington Tea Co. LLC was hit with a class action lawsuit alleging it deceptively markets its Carrington Farms brand coconut oils as a healthy alternative to butter and other cooking oils.

Plaintiff Amy Boulton filed the coconut oil class action lawsuit last week, alleging she relied on Carrington’s “misleading and unlawful” claims when she purchased the coconut oil products. Specifically, Boulton takes issue with Carrington Farms brand Coconut Cooking Oil and Extra Virgin Coconut Oil.

“Carrington is well aware of consumer preference for healthful foods, and therefore employs, and has employed, a strategic marketing campaign intended to convince consumers that the Carrington Farms coconut products are healthy, despite that they are almost entirely composed of unhealthy saturated fat,” the Carrington Farms coconut oil class action lawsuit states.

“Through statements placed directly on the labels of the Carrington Farms coconut oil products, Carrington markets and advertises the products as both inherently healthy, and healthy alternatives to butter and other oils, even though the products’ total and saturated fat content render them both inherently unhealthy, and less healthy alternatives,” Boulton alleges in the coconut oil class action lawsuit.

According to the Carrington Farms class action lawsuit, the coconut oil products contain 14 grams of fat and 12 grams of saturated fat per 14-gram serving. Boulton argues that Carrington’s labels are designed to distract consumers from noticing that its coconut oils consist almost entirely of saturated fat.

Boulton argues that the Carrington Farms coconut oil products’ labels violate U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidelines as well as California law. She says that federal agencies recommend using oils that are lower in saturated fats because studies have indicated coconut oil increases the risk of heart disease and may lead to other health problems. She says she would not have purchased the products if she had known they were almost purely saturated fat.

Boulton filed the Carrington Farms class action lawsuit on behalf of herself and a Class of Californians who purchased Carrington Farms Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and/or Carrington Farms Coconut Cooking Oil for personal or household use. The coconut oil class action lawsuit asserts that Carrington violated California’s Unfair Competition Law, False Advertising Law and the Consumer Legal Remedies Act.

By filing the coconut oil class action lawsuit, Boulton seeks an order compelling Carrington to discontinue using misleading and unlawful marketing tactics for its coconut oil products, to conduct a corrective advertising campaign, and to restore the amounts it has been unjustly enriched by the allegedly deceptive marketing campaign.

Boulton is represented by Paul K. Joseph of the Law Offices of Paul K. Joseph and Jack Fitzgerald, Trevor M. Flynn and Melanie Persinger of the Law Office of Jack Fitzgerald PC.

The Carrington Farms Coconut Oil Class Action Lawsuit is Amy Boulton v. Carrington Tea Co. LLC, Case No. BC609360, in the Superior Court of the State of California for the County of Los Angeles.

  1. Margaret Crockett says:

We purchased several containers of this. It did not do anything & we may have gotten unhealthier. Where do you find out more about it?

  2. David says:

I put on several pounds using this product, in a very short time, and had to stop using it. I dont have the receipts, but I do still have two containers of the stuff. Healthy it is not. It is saturated fat, simple as that. Whether coconut oil has a healthy effect on some members of the public, is unproven by any number of studies, so to assume that it is, and promote it as a healthy food is morally wrong. I believe that cocunut oil probably does have a good effect on the elderly with mental degenerative diseases. However a normally fit person 55 or under should not rely on this product as an healthy alternative to anything. I want to sign up for this class action.

    1. David says:

But this is a saturated fat which may or may not have healthy properties. It is not an essential body fat, To claim that it is better for you than butter or other products is untrue, I tried this product and put on many pounds in a short time, which I then had to exercise off again!
