A California man claims that Biomet failed to adequately warn consumers about the risks and severity of side effects of the Biomet M2a Magnum Metal-on-Metal hip system.
Plaintiff Christopher A. filed this hip replacement lawsuit against Biomet, alleging he sustained severe hip replacement injuries, including hip implant metal poisoning, tissue and bone destruction as a direct result of Biomet’s defective manufacturing and marketing of the Biomet M2a Magnum hip implant.
Christopher received the Biomet hip in July 2009 during a hip replacement surgery. Christopher claims after the surgery that he suffered severe pain and had to undergo a complex, risky and painful premature hip revision surgery in 2015 to remove and replace the defective Biomet M2a Magnum hip implant.
The Biomet hip replacement lawsuit further alleges that Biomet failed to adequately test the impact of the metal-on-metal hip replacement system or warn about the risk of hip implant metal poisoning or that the implant may loosen or fail within a few years after surgery.
Christopher is seeking judgment for compensatory damages, pain and suffering, loss of earnings, medical expenses, attorney’s fees and court costs.
Biomet Hip Problems
The Biomet M2a Magnum Hip implant is a metal-on-metal hip replacement system that has been implanted in patients throughout the United States. Although it was promoted for active and younger patients, reported problems suggest that the artificial hip implant may be prone to fail within a few years of surgery.
While typical hip implants consist of components made of metal and plastic, the Biomet Magnum has three all-metal components: a metal femoral head, metal taper insert and metal acetabulum cup.
As the metal parts rub against each other, microscopic shavings of metal may be released into the hip joint, which could cause inflammation, loosening, and other problems associated with metal poisoning from hip replacement.
Potential signs of Biomet Magnum hip problems could include:
- Unexplained hip pain
- Swelling and soft tissue damage
- Unexplained tumors
- Difficulty standing or walking
- Loosening of the hip implant
- Additional hip revision surgery
A surprising number of individuals throughout the United States have reported experiencing problems with the Biomet hip replacement, often involving metal poisoning from hip replacement or failure of the implant due to the design of the device.
Although the hip implant is expected to last more than 15 years, many individuals have required hip revision surgery within a few years to replace or correct problems with Biomet M2a Magnum hip implants.
