Facebook Sponsored Stories settlement

UPDATE 3: On Nov. 17, 2016, Top Class Actions readers who submitted timely and valid claims for the Facebook settlement started receiving checks worth as much as $15. Congratulations to everyone who got PAID!

A federal judge yesterday granted preliminary approval to a $20 million Facebook Sponsored Stories class action lawsuit settlement that will pay up to $10 each to Facebook users.

The Sponsored Stories settlement will end a drawn-out legal battle over the social network’s use of users’ names, photos and identities to advertise products without their permission. Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit claimed the advertising program violated users’ right to privacy by publicizing their “likes” without asking for permission or offering compensation.

Facebook has agreed to pay $20 million to settle the class action lawsuit, which will be split amongst charities, attorneys and the 125 million U.S. Facebook users who appeared in Sponsored Stories without their consent.

U.S. District Judge Richard Seeborg originally rejected the Facebook Sponsored Stories settlement in August because it did not provide monetary relief to Class Members. Facebook revised the settlement in October to include users, which apparently passed muster with Seeborg, who said Monday the Settlement “has no obvious deficiencies” and “appears to be the product of serious” negotiations between both parties.

In addition to the monetary benefits, the Facebook Sponsored Stories class action settlement will allow users to exclude themselves from the advertising program.

The Facebook Sponsored Stories Class Action Lawsuit Settlement case is Angel Fraley, et al. v. Facebook, Inc., Case No. 11-cv-1726, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California.
