Lipidryl refundsThe Federal Trade Commission recently announced that they would be mailing checks to consumers who purchased Lipidryl weight loss supplements. A total of 1,296 checks will be mailed out to equal the $250,485 settlement reached by the FTC on behalf of consumers.

Individuals who receive a refund check from the FTC for their Lipidryl purchase must cash their refund check by Jan. 19, 2016, which is 60 days from the date of check issue. If these checks are not cashed by Jan. 19, 2016, the check will become void.

The refund check that Lipidryl buyers will receive represents a full refund for the purchase price for consumers. Eligible consumers should expect to see their Lipidryl refunds shortly.

Rust Consulting Inc. is the active administrator for the Lipidryl settlement. This company is responsible for mailing the refund checks to consumers. Should Lipidryl customers have questions about the refunds, the settlement administrator can be reached directly at 877-690-7102.

Lipidryl Weight Loss Supplement Settlement

In December 2014, the Federal Trade Commission reached a settlement with Bioscience Research Institute LLC, the marketers of Lipidryl. According to the charges by the FTC, Bioscience Research Institute used deceptive ads to market their weight loss product, saying consumers could see “substantial” weight loss as a result of using the product.

Bioscience sold a 3-month supply of Lipidryl, a product containing African mango seed extract, to enhance weight loss for $129.99. According to the claim, “The FTC complaint charges that ads for Lipidryl falsely claimed that the supplement was clinically proven to cause substantial weight loss (such as 28 pounds in 10 weeks) and reduce users’ wasitlines.”

In addition to the monetary payout required by the FTC as part of the settlement, Bioscience will have to perform high-quality human clinical trials, and claims for Lipidyrl or other weight loss products offered by the company will have to have the empirical research support of at least two such studies.

FTC and Consumer Protection

The Federal Trade Commission acknowledges that “it can be tough to tell useful products and services that don’t work or aren’t safe.” The FTC website has a lot of information for consumers on how they can best protect themselves from being victims of deceptive marketing or unsafe products.

According to the FTC website, “The Federal Trade Commission works for consumers to prevent fraudulent, deceptive and unfair business practices and to provide information to help spot, stop, and avoid them.” Consumers are encouraged to file complaints if they become aware of such practices so the FTC can investigate and protect consumers.

The FTC is also one of several members of the National Prevention Council, an organization that provides leadership at the federal level on important topics such as prevention, wellness and health promotion in order to support the goal of “increasing the number of Americans who are healthy at every stage of life.”
