A California resident recently filed yet another Lipitor diabetes lawsuit against pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc., alleging that the drug caused her to develop type-2 diabetes.
The 65-year-old plaintiff, Rose R., began taking Lipitor in November 2004 at the direction of her physician, and stopped in September 2007. Roper was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes in May of 2007.
Rose’s Lipitor diabetes lawsuit alleges that her type-2 diabetes diagnosis is a direct result of taking Lipitor. The Lipitor diabetes lawsuit further claims that Pfizer Inc. failed to adequately warn the public and the medical community about its potentially dangerous side effects, including diabetes. Because of Pfizer’s actions, Rose claims, she has suffered from physical, emotional, and economic harm.
The plaintiff filed her Lipitor diabetes lawsuit on multiple counts, including but not limited to negligence, failure to warn, breach of express and implied warranties, and constructive fraud.
Lipitor Basics
Lipitor (atorvasatatin calcium) is a popular heart disease medication, manufactured and sold by Pfizer Inc. Lipitor was first approved to treat heart disease by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996, and quickly became a best-selling prescription drug.
Since its introduction to the market, Lipitor has been prescribed for more than 29 million Americans, and Pfizer benefits hugely from it sales. Indeed, the drug manufacturing giant makes over $130 billion globally from Lipitor sales alone.
In response to studies suggesting that Lipitor comes with potentially harmful side effects, the FDA issued a warning about these complications. The FDA warning included the potential risk of type-2 diabetes.
Despite this warning, Pfizer claims that the benefits of Lipitor outweigh any potential risks, even serious ones like type-2 diabetes.
Lipitor diabetes research has shown that the risk of developing type-2 diabetes is greater for women taking Lipitor than it is for men taking Lipitor.
Though there is an alleged elevated risk involved in taking the drug for women, the benefits of Lipitor are also fewer for women than they are for men. A study published by the University of Massachusetts Medical School looked at records of 150,000 women taking Lipitor over a period of several years. The study found that post-menopausal women taking Lipitor were almost 50 percent more likely to develop type-2 diabetes than those who did not.
Lipitor Diabetes Lawsuits
Lipitor diabetes lawsuits like Roper’s have become increasingly more frequent after recent studies.
In just a few months, the number of Lipitor lawsuits climbed from a few dozen to several hundred. Plaintiffs involved in Lipitor diabetes lawsuits are women who allege that Pfizer failed to adequately warn the public and the medical community about the risk of type-2 diabetes associated with Lipitor prior to ingesting the heart disease medication.
If you or someone you know was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes after taking Lipitor or a similar drug, you may be able to file a Lipitor diabetes lawsuit.
The Lipitor Diabetes Lawsuit is Case No. 2:15-cv-04406-RMG, in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, Charleston Division.
