The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that Zithromax is one of the leading causes of drug-induced liver injury.
The NIH states that since Zithromax is so widely used, it is now one of the most common causes of drug-induced liver injury.
According to the NIH, Zithromax liver problems are typically reported one to three weeks after the start of treatment with Zithromax, and typically show symptoms like jaundice (yellow skin), stomach pain, severe skin itching, and dark urine.
The NIH reports that Zithromax liver problems may take four to eight weeks to recover, with some cases taking even longer to resolve. The NIH reports that in rare cases permanent liver damage and death have been reported in Zithromax patients. The NIH states that Zithromax liver issues are similar to related antibiotics, including Erythromycin.
According to the FDA, Zithromax side effects could include a variety of liver problems. This could include hepatitis, a general term for inflammation of the liver, as well as jaundice, liver failure, and liver damage.
Based on reported Zithromax side effects, the FDA advises against using Zithromax in patients with impaired liver function, as this could potentially increase the risk of liver issues. The FDA’s document indicates that the body mostly eliminates Zithromax through the liver, making the liver a potential hot spot for side effects. The FDA states that these alleged side effects are rare, but very serious when they do occur.
Zithromax, the trade name for Azithromycin, is a macrolide antibiotic. Zithromax is effective against a wide variety of bacteria, allowing it to treat a huge range of infections. The World Health Organization lists Zithromax as one of the essential drugs needed to build a basic working healthcare system.
The drug is among the most common antibiotics in the world, making people predisposed towards Zithromax side effects likely to encounter them at some point. Other antibiotics in the family have been reported to cause liver problems similar to the alleged Zithromax liver issues.
A Zithromax class action lawsuit investigation has been launched to explore the possibility of legal action against the drug’s makers. Such a Zithromax class action lawsuit could allege that the makers of Zithromax were aware, or reasonably should have been aware, of the risk of Zithromax liver problems, and then further allege that drugmakers did not do enough to protect the public from these alleged side effects.
Under federal law, a drug’s manufacturers have a legal obligation to thoroughly test their drugs for safety and efficacy, and to monitor FDA reports and medical research for signs that their drug is having unforeseen side effects once it hits the market.
If a Zithromax class action lawsuit can establish these facts in a court of law, the makers of Zithromax could be liable for liver issues, as well as other side effects.
