Propecia sexual side effectsGiorgos T., a former model for Armani and Versace in his early 20s, never thought he would have to deal with a plummeting sex life and the potential loss of a relationship with his girlfriend, but that became his reality.

Giorgos began losing clumps of hair and feared he was going bald, so he decided to try the hair loss treatment Propecia. Having a full head of hair was a requirement for any model, and a receding hairline for him could have meant the end of his career.

Unfortunately, for many men, the side effects from the drug can be just as devastating as hair loss in itself can be, possibly even more so. The main issue with Propecia is that many men experience sexual dysfunction once they have taken Propecia and the dysfunction can continue even after stopping its use.

Says Giorgos of his 6-year ordeal, “My confidence as a man went down the drain, and it was at such a young age. I‘m a positive person in general but not being able to perform takes a toll on you.”

Giorgos, now 31 and has stopped taking Propecia, which has helped save his sex life… and his relationship with his girlfriend.

“Confidence is your everything and if you cannot perform in bed when you attract people, the feeling for men is devastating.”

What is Propecia?

Propecia (finasteride) is an FDA-approved male pattern baldness treatment. This particular type of baldness is caused by hormones and a genetic predisposition to the condition. About 30% of men experience this condition by age 30, and half of men by age 50.

Propecia baldness treatment works by preventing testosterone to convert to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT shriks the hair follicle, which eventually leads to baldness. The 1 mg does of finasteride can lower the DHT levels by as much as 60% and it has proven quite effective.

Propecia Side Effects

Propecia affects the body in a number of ways, not just by impacting sexual function. Other alleged side effects associated with Propecia include:

  • Male breast development (gynecomastia)
  • Fatigue and lethargy
  • Muscle atrophy
  • Skin issues (acne, rash)
  • Metabolism issues
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Mood disorders including anxiety and depression
  • Impaired memory and cognition

The sexual side effects experienced by Propeica users can affect men in a number of ways. Studies have reported up to 39% of men have experienced sexual side effects that include:

  • Lack of sexual desire
  • Decreased sexual arousal
  • Erectile Dysfunction
  • Premature ejaculation and other ejaculation disorders
  • Shrinkage and numbness in the penis or scrotum
  • Delayed or dulled orgasm
  • Inability to reach orgasm

When men develop sexual side effects from Propecia, they assume that stopping the drug will restore their sexual functioning. For many men, however, stopping Propecia does not guarantee the immediate return of their prior functioning, and a 2003 study confirmed that only half will be helped soon after stopping Propecia.

Because the continuation of side effects occurs so frequently, the condition has its own name: Post Finasteride Syndrome. Some men experience side effects for days, weeks, months and longer once they have discontinued the drug.
