Suave Keratin Class Action LawsuitA class action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of consumers who purchased Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion 30 Day Smoothing Kit, alleging it causes significant hair loss.

Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit allege they purchased the product because they believed Unilever’s false representations that it would smooth their hair and coat it with Keratin, a protein found naturally in hair. Little did they know, however, that the Suave Keratin treatment contains an ingredient or combination of ingredients that causes significant hair loss upon proper application.

The class action lawsuit is accusing Unilever of false advertising and of issuing a belated and incomplete “recall” of the hazardous product, thus violating consumer protection laws and breaching its express and implied warranties.

The Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion 30 Day Smoothing Kit class action lawsuit is brought on behalf of all consumers who purchased the product.

UPDATE: Unilever agreed to a $10 million class action settlement resolving claims that Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion 30 Day Smoothing Kit was falsely advertised and damaged hair.

UPDATE 2: The Suave Keratin Smoothing Kit class action settlement received final approval on July 9, 2014.

  • Anonymous September 9, 2012

I used this product and within days I started losing my hair. What do I have to do to join the suit?

  • Anonymous September 26, 2012

I used this product, back in June of 2012. After leaving it on my hair only five minutes, my hair was completely ruined. I ran into the same problems that when I went to blowdry my hair, I noticed it breaking off, and then when I took a shower after the initial application, I realized my hair was coming out by the handful.

  • Anonymous September 26, 2012

I used this product also and wish I had heard about this lawsuit sooner. I have naturally curly hair and my hair has gone completely straight and is horribly frizzy and like straw!

  • Anonymous September 27, 2012

This product cause my my hair to be dry brittle/ breaking

  • Anonymous September 27, 2012

I bought this product to calm my frizzy hair. Well, now the frizzies are gone, along with alot of my hair. How can I join the lawsuit?

  • Anonymous September 27, 2012

I used this product and within the first day my hair started breaking and falling out. 6 months later, after deep conditioning and taking an all natural supplement my hair is still very fine, thin and frizzy. It completely changed the structure of my hair. I also have always had naturally curly hair and now my hair barely curls, the hair at the crown still breaks and will not curl at all. Please let me know how to join the suit as well.

  • Anonymous September 29, 2012

This product melted my hair as well. I took pics and texted my friend who recommended it to me, but never did anything about it. I actually washed it out in the first 2 minutes because my hair started to krinkle and fall off in that short amount of time. I am SOOO glad I didn’t leave it on.

  • Anonymous November 16, 2012

This product destroyed my hair. It thinned it, and I have chunks of hair that feel out. This is a terrible product. I have warned my friends and family about this product and to not use it.

  • Anonymous December 10, 2012

Has anybody heard anything recent or any updates on this lawsuit?

  • Vicki Fritz December 31, 2012

I used this product in June of 2012, my hair will never be the same! I was sent this info from my hairdresser who witnessed what this product did to my hair. I have used countless products to retain the texture of my hair, but nothing will work. My hair has been falling out, is very course and has no curl at all. This product ruined my hair!

  • Paula Hodnett January 17, 2013

I used this product in April of 2012. I experienced significant hair loss and 9months later, my hair is just now growing back! It was horrible and chAnged my hair forever! It went from wavy to very fine and straight. Horrible experience!

  • Lucy March 17, 2013

I used this product March of 2012, I noticed some hair loss at the time & it continued to fall after every wash. My hair became very brittle & I had to cut it very short. Even my hair dresser noticed my hair was falling out a lot. Now I have five bald spots in my hair & am going through medical treatment. During my last treatment I had about 20 shots in my scalp to try to help the hair grow back. Not only was my hair damaged but also my self esteem. Many nights I cried wondering why. My daughter found this article & now I know & would like something done about it. It’s not enough with suave removing the product and sweeping it under the rug.

  • patricia morse March 24, 2013

  • Brian August 29, 2013

    Anybody heard anything?

  • Brian September 11, 2013

Got a call from my attorney today, she asked me to send in the packaging, and unused product. I am hoping this is a good sign. She did say Unilever tried to settle out if court but the amount of money they offered was not nearly enough. I don’t know what that amount of money was, but didn’t sound like much.

  • REBECCA September 12, 2013

have not heard any from my lawyer except she was going to get a offer from SUAVE, sounds like from Brian they won’t offer much ,i would never cut my hair for $50,000, my hair is still falling out, receding line ,thin, burnt, and bald spots every where , its been almost a year since i used it, now with the ingredients exposed and broken down so we understand as we consumers are not chemical scientists,,we probably should worry about some cancer in the future, this has soaked into the hair follicle,a lot of peoples hair is messed up ,or no hair at all ,and like me no growth or slow , i saved the box,and bottles, really worried, afraid to use shampoo or anything without knowing all the ingredients are ,SAUVE has not said nothing about may cause cancer and great HAIR LOSS,SELF ESTEEM,skin burns, on the box,if they would have told the truth ,i bet not one box would have sold, it was not worth $12 bucks to mess my long beautiful hair up, SAUVE stated in a blog they were taking care of this ,WHERE? their product works faster then they do, THANKS BRIAN FOR YOUR POST and any others who heard something, hope you post to keep us updated ,where in this boat together,

  • Maria Portillo September 12, 2013

  • N.germany September 18, 2013

Why I thought it was just MY hair and that it was just normal shedding! Not this product destroyed my hair to the point where I have to wear extensions. Totally traumatizing and humiliating. My hair literally melted and some of my edges fell out.

  • Yaneris Nolasco September 19, 2013

My hair used to be so beautiful and long. But after purchasing this product about a year ago, immediately my hair started falling out. Three days later after using this product I wake up with big bold spots in my hair. After that my hair starting falling out and breaking completely. I used to take pride in my hair, but now all I have to show is bold spots and shame. I am so depress right now, all thanks to this product.

  • Dina October 17, 2013

I used this product in March of 2012…it utterly destroyed my hair! It took an entire year of trimming my hair every four weeks and daily hydrating treatments and weekly deep conditioning treatments, along with keeping my hair in a ponytail almost daily to hide the severe damage to my hair! After using the product my hair looked like it had been singed from the bottom up like I had leaned over an open flame!! DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT!

I got this product early 2012 and my sister helped me get it done. I have beautiful curly hair but wanted my hair straight. THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. The day after I used this product scalp was on fire every spot of skin the product touched felt hot and like if it was on fire. I had pimple like bumps on all my head. Not fun at all and the effect of straight hair only lasted 3 days. Now me hair is not the same. I have parts of my hair that are straight some are curly and always frizzy. no matter what I put on my hair it don’t look good. I have cut my hair every 3 to 4 months to get all the damage out but I still have a long way to go. The sad part is that sometimes I still get bumps on my head and when I’m out in the sun for long periods of time it still feels like if my head is on fire. I don’t recommend buying any product like this one!!!!!

  • Carol Dowling October 18, 2013

Hi, my hair has been consistently falling out for the last 1.5 yrs. I use the suave keratin shampoo & conditioner every other day & never realized it could be the products causing this! Have you found out if the formaldehyde is also present in these 2 products? It’s criminal that I’m losing so much hair, even though I have a full head of hair. Please contact me by email or phone to discuss this. Thanks so much.

  • Laura Saenz October 19, 2013

I used this product and it completly ruined my hair. Obviously they do not know what smoothing means. Because afterwards my hair was the complete opposite of smooth. The textureof my hair changed, it was like pieces of it had been burnt off. The worse hair care product ever!

  • Rebecca October 21, 2013

OSHA stated that their were no safe levels in hair straightening products and they were told this,- LA TIMES ,, so they knew from the get go, but this was not supposed to be a hair straightener either ,it was mainly for frizzy hair and a deep conditioner of Keratin, everything sauve says is a lie , i read this online LA.times, just the smell caused my eyes to burn and head and skin , it ran everybody outside and they should have stated do not use if you have asthma copd ,thanks sauve for trying to kill me now i only look like i am dieing from all the missing hair ,

  • Kate Muskrat October 26, 2013

Hello, I used this product in May of 2011, the day before my sons first communion. At I wanted straighter hair with more shine. I applied the product and within my minutes my hair began to frizz and my scalp began to burn. I rushed to the bathroom to wash it our but the damage was done. My hair felt like cotton candy. I dried it and tried to work with it but it kept falling out. My have was like a brittle elastic. The next morning I went to a salon to see if they could fix it but it was to damaged. They had to cut 4 in off and that did not even begin to address the damage at the root. It as has taken a year and a half for my hair to grow out and look normal. I have pictures of what this horrible product did to my hair if needed.

  • Bobbie Houston October 30, 2013

I have been using Sauve Keratin shampoo for some time and have noticed a sufficent hair lost. Just learned today that this shampoo may be the cause of the hair lost

  • Michelle A Pinkney November 1, 2013

I used this product on February 25, 2012. I had used over-the-counter keratin products before with great results. I left it in for a shorter than recommended time as it smelled too strong. I have naturally curly hair and all I was interested in doing was eliminating frizz. This product apparently had a professional straightener in it, but it was not noted anywhere on the packaging OR in the instructions and I read them thoroughly. My hair was brittle, dry and seriously damaged and I had to wait an entire year for it to begin to grow out normally again. I have to say that it was one of the most traumatic experiences for me. They should be sued for the emotional and physical pain they have caused.

  • Connie Cooper November 8, 2013

I used the shampoo and conditioner products for over a year. I had hair almost to my waist and it started to look like straw. Next thing I know my hair started to get thinner and thinner. Then I started to get a rash on the crown of my head and it would get so bad and hurt so bad I could not even hardly touch my head. I had no clue it was the Suave and never suspected it but I should of known it always got worse after doing my hair. I kept cutting it and cutting it till there is not much left and I have had to do treatments to even get it half way decent looking again and it is still not great. I still have the rash and it flares up and hurts. My hair is still vary thin on the crown and the sides and it used to be thick not anymore. I had treatments done and special shampoos to try to regain some of what I had lost.

  • Amy E. Davis February 21, 2014

My name is Amy Davis. I am a partner at Christiansen Davis LLC and lead counsel in a case representing victims of this product. In total, we represent approximately 100 victims. We have successfully resolved about 60 of these claims out of court.

In our opinion, the class settlement proposed by Unilever is unfair to victims. Reimbursement for efforts to repair damaged hair and for medical treatment would be limited to much less than what many actually spent out of pocket. The proposed settlement would also minimize compensation to victims for psychological injuries and would require victims go through a special process to prove they deserve any compensation for these injuries at all.

We would not recommend Unilever’s proposal to any of the victims we represent.

Unilever put a dangerous product on the market that has caused permanent damage—even balding. It has forever changed the lives of the victims and their families. Our hope is that the Court ultimately rejects Unilever’s attempt to sidestep responsibility for this product.

Even if the settlement is approved, victims have the right to opt out and pursue an individual claim. We are helping many of our clients do just that to ensure they get a fair outcome.

  • Christiansen Davis March 10, 2014

Unilever Sends Out Notice of Pending Settlement in Suave’s 30-Day Keratin Treatment Kit

Dallas, TX | March 7, 2014 — Unilever recently asked a court to approve a settlement that could bind all victims who have not yet settled their claims individually. In our opinion, the proposal is unfair to victims. Reimbursement for efforts to repair damaged hair and for medical treatment would be limited to much less than what many actually spent out of pocket. The proposed settlement would also minimize compensation to victims for psychological injuries and would require victims go through a special process to prove they deserve any compensation for these injuries at all.

We can now make a request on your behalf to opt out of the proposed class action settlement. That will allow us to pursue your claim without the strict limitations and uncertain claims process required if the settlement is finally approved.

Call us to talk more about your options and how we can help you choose the best, quickest and easiest method for you to be compensated fairly for your injuries. Please call 214-838-3501 ext. 2 or 1-800-388-1736. Christiansen Davis LLC, 4100 Spring Valley Rd., Suite 450 Dallas, TX 75244.

I can’t find my receipts for this product when I purchase it a year ago. I think I paid 89.00 dollars for the kit. Can anyone tell me how much was the kit selling for when they purchase it at the beauty supply store?

  • Ida Velez September 16, 2014

I used this product about 2 years ago. I bought 4 or 5 of them because there were coupons for the product for 2.00 off each. I used the product on myself and on my roommates mother. I think I used it twice and the second time I used it, as soon as I put it on my head, my scalp was burning. I went into the shower to get it out and when I did this, my hair was falling out, lots of hair. I had nightmares about this for along time. The thought of not having hair, stressed me out extremely.

  • stephanie s. s. September 25, 2014

I used suave 30day kit about two years ago and still today my scalp is not the same. And my hair is not growing as it once did. My hair was very healthy before I used this product. Days and weeks after using the kit my hair was coming out especially in the areas where my scalp was irritated and flared up. Using this product was a big mistake I only wish I could go back to that day. I would have left it in the store. I was doing real good I had not put any chemical in my hair and I was thinking this kit would not be like harsh chemicals….I was wrong it was worst. I had previously been using wen hair products and my hair was in good condition before the suave 30day kit. After using that awful kit Wen could not even help me. Nothing I used seemed to work only to let it grow out all that didnt just fall out . Cut my hair down and I used Aloe Vera on my scalp along with shea butter. The texture and shine seems to be gone forever.
