dialysis treatmentHundreds of people suffered from heart attacks and related cardiac complications from the dialysis solutions GranuFlo and NaturaLyte, manufactured by Fresenisu Medical Care and used in thousands of dialysis clinics across the country. After a 2012 NaturaLyte/GranuFlo recall, efforts to make dialysis less dangerous are still ongoing. One potential development revolves around the use of nanotechnology.

Fresenius Medical Care is the named defendant in hundreds of GranuFlo lawsuits consolidated into multilitigation, and multiple GranuFlo class action lawsuits. Plaintiffs in these GranuFlo lawsuits and GranuFlo class action lawsuit filings allege that Fresenius failed to warn doctors that the dialysis products increase bicarbonate levels and cause cardiac conditions. Over 900 people have allegedly died from dialysis heart failure related to the recalled chemicals.

Scientists in Japan have created a device that not only would prevent these dialysis risks, but could make the procedure less painful for patients. In the overwhelming majority of cases, the treated blood is pumped directly into the heart, and the frequent treatments can lead to scarring of the skin around the heart, and are generally painful. At the National Institute for Materials Science in Japan, researchers have created a nanofiber mesh that can remove chemicals such as creatinine and other “nitrogenous waste products.”

Unlike machines in centers operated by Fresenius Medical Care and other companies, the device would be wearable, thus removing the need to visit kidney dialysis centers and subject oneself to the vagaries of technicians’ procedures and experience. One common complaint in individual cases that may find its way into GranuFlo heart failure class action lawsuits is that employees were unaware of the potentially significant increase in sodium bicarbonate levels, a known risk factor for NaturaLyte cardiac arrest side effects.

For now, however, patients will not be able to get access to the new device as it is still in the early stages of development. More importantly, it will do little for people who have worked with NaturaLyte class action lawsuit attorneys to decide whether to seek damages from Fresenius Medical Care for their sale of allegedly dangerous kidney dialysis chemicals through an individual action or as part of a group of plaintiffs.

If you or someone you know has faced problems while undergoing kidney dialysis, you may not be able to avoid future problems with a nanofiber mesh just yet, but you may be able to take legal action.
