Merck faces another Propecia side effects lawsuit, alleging that the drug maker failed to warn patients that its hair loss treatment could cause sexual dysfunction side effects that may be permanent.
Plaintiff Kenneth B. filed the Propecia side effects lawsuit, joining thousands of men who are already part of a multidistrict litigation (MDL) against Merck.
Kenneth, an Indiana resident, was prescribed Propecia, generic finasteride, a hair loss treatment for men, when he was 22 years old and used it as directed for a period of approximately 15 years to treat male pattern baldness.
While consuming the hair loss drug, Kenneth allegedly began to suffer from adverse side effects, including severe sexual dysfunction. He continues to suffer from Propecia side effects even after discontinuing use of the drug.
The Propecia side effects lawsuit accuses Merck of failing to disclose to consumers and the medical community the defective nature and risks of Propecia side effects, including various forms of permanent sexual dysfunction during and after discontinuation of use.
Propecia Side Effects
A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine suggests that men who use Propecia may experience serious side effects including loss of libido and erectile dysfunction. The study examined medications that are used to treat problems linked to an enlarged prostate and that can also treat hair loss.
Researchers said men who take Propecia and similar drugs for hair loss or for urinary tract infections must use extreme caution because of the side effects, which can also include the development of breast tissue, or gynecomastia.
The Propecia review study, conducted by researchers at Boston University School of Medicine who examined data from clinical trials, found that 15 percent of men who used Propecia experienced sexual dysfunction including decreased libido and erectile dysfunction.
That is compared to seven percent of men who took a placebo and experienced sexual dysfunction. The clinical trials used in the review study examined patients who used Propecia for hair loss and those who used Propecia to treat an enlarged prostate.
Propecia Lawsuits
Thousands of Propecia side effects lawsuits, like Kenneth’s, are currently pending in courts across the United States. In April 2012, a federal judicial panel transferred Propecia lawsuits pending in federal courts to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Each of those Propecia lawsuits was filed against Merck and alleged that Propecia caused “persistent sexual dysfunction.”
To date, over 1,100 men across the country have filed Propecia side effects lawsuits against Merck seeking compensation for these complications.
New Propecia side effects lawsuits continue to be filed, and discovery is currently underway in these and other courts handling Propecia litigation.
This Propecia Side Effects Lawsuit is Case No: 1:15-cv-0533-JG-VVP and joins the larger Propecia MDL In Re: Propecia (Finasteride) Product Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2331 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
