made-in-USAWhen you’re shopping for clothes there’s a chance you’ll see tags marked “Made in the USA.” It’s a product claim some consumers seek.

Studies have shown consumers are willing to pay more for products made in the United States. That is based, in part, on the belief that American workmanship is superior, and labor laws in the country are more fair than other countries.

So, the “Made in the USA” marketing boast has financial implications. But, if the claims aren’t true, a company can face false advertising charges and lawsuits.

Trendy Citizens of Humanity jeans, sold at some of the higher-end retailers, reportedly uses some foreign-made components despite the “Made in the USA” boast. In one state in particular, California, that can be costly to a company if it is shown that any element of their product is made in any other country.

Other, lower-price competitors typically are manufactured overseas in countries known for their cheap labor and costs of fabric and components. Among the countries known for their cheap clothing: Bangladesh, Nicaragua, China, Taiwan, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Because of the hunger of inexpensive clothes, seeing a Made in the USA logo on apparel is relatively rare.

Citizens of Humanity Jeans Litigation

Citizens of Humanity is under investigation for allegedly labeling its jeans as Made in the USA despite allegedly using elements from other countries including fabric, thread, buttons, rivets, and parts of the zipper assembly.

If any of those components were foreign-made, Citizens of Humanity would be in violation of California consumer laws.

If you bought a pair of Citizens of Humanity jeans that had Made in the USA on the label you may be eligible to participate in a false labeling class action lawsuit investigation.
