Self proclaimed on their website as “America’s most trusted stain,” it seems that recently this claim has been called into question.

Olympic has a product called Olympic Rescue It Resurfacer. It is designed to give a fresh and updated look to worn wood or concrete.

By locking down splinters and filling in cracks, this product is aimed to have the do-it-yourselfer avoid costly replacements and allow consumers to give their worn surface a makeover.

Available in over 110 colors, with clear instructions on how to prep your surface before applying Rescue It, and specific instructions on how to treat your wood or concrete. The Olympic stain is made from acrylic and provides a waterproof surface, according to the product website.

Consumer Complaints about Olympic Rescue It!

In short, consumers have voiced complaints about Olympic’s product not delivering in every aspect of the claims they have made. After having high hopes for a nice-looking project, consumers have expressed the following problems with the product:

  • The stain peels from the surface where it was applied.
  • Bubbles form between the surface and the paint, and once they are “popped” they make holes and begin to peel away from the surface.
  • The surface of Olympic Rescue It is not barefoot friendly as described- homeowners say it is too hot to walk barefoot and they cannot leave pets out on the patio or deck covered in the stain because it is unsafe for animal paws.
  • Splinters that were initially covered start to flake off.
  • When attempting to remove the stain, it adheres unevenly, so in the places it does stick, it is very difficult to remove.
  • Cracks up to ¼” were not filled as stated.
  • The stain is not waterproof, so water can seep under the stain causing damage to the stain as well as the surface it covers.
  • Using a power washer to remove the stain is not successful.

Olympic’s Response to Consumer Complaints

Olympic offers a warranty to for their product, and this warranty appears on their website as follows: “Olympic guarantees satisfaction with the application and performance properties of this product when applied to a properly prepared surface in accordance with label directions. This guarantee is limited to your choice of product replacement or refund of the purchase price.”

While this is a nice gesture, many consumers say it simply isn’t enough. Consumers complain that they have invested many hours of time and hard work, only to have a product that disappoints and doesn’t live up to the claims on the label. Homeowners claim they have had to redo the surface that they treated with Olympic Rescue It, costing them more money and more time than they bargained for.
