3D Diabetes Risk Crossword on white backgroundA Florida woman has filed a Lipitor lawsuit against Pfizer Inc. for allegedly causing her to develop type-2 diabetes, after ingesting Lipitor.

Plaintiff Julie H. claims that in direct result of using the defendant’s cholesterol-lowering drug, she developed type-2 diabetes, the Lipitor diabetes lawsuit states.

Like millions of Americans, Julie had been suffering from high cholesterol and was at a higher risk of experiencing cardiovascular complications.

Since its release in 1996, Lipitor has been promoted to aid patients in developing a healthier and active lifestyle, while preventing bad cholesterol levels from rising. Additionally, Lipitor also encourages the body to absorb good cholesterol properties, which would ultimately allow the patient greater longevity.

After reviewing the patient’s case, Julie’s physician had recommended Lipitor to her to optimize her chances of good health. With this in mind, the plaintiff had begun her Lipitor prescription in September 2003, but was soon met with complications.

Just a month later, she was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes and had eventually ended her Liptior prescription in March 2005. A number of the diabetic symptoms the plaintiff was, and continues, contending with had ultimately made her prescription to Lipitor all but useless.

There are a number of symptoms associated with type-2 diabetes, including increased risk of heart disease, which Liptior was supposed to prevent. Additionally, the plaintiff has had to adjust a number of changes in her life since her diagnosis, including taking a wide range of medications, adhere to a strict diabetic diet, frequently see her doctor, and be constantly on the look out for swelling and blindness.

However, it was only recently that the plaintiff discovered that Lipitor could have been the cause of her unfortunate disease.

Overview of Lipitor Diabetes Allegations

In early 2012, the FDA required Pfizer to update Lipitor’s label to include possible changes in glucose levels; many consumers do not realize that this side effect can cause type-2 diabetes. Type-2 diabetes is caused by sudden fluctuations of blood-sugar levels and insulin in the body, often impacted by excess intake of fats and lack of exercise.

Lipitor has been alleged to spur these surges of blood-sugar, due to how the drug is metabolized in the body. Lipitor diabetes has been most commonly seen in overweight postmenopausal women. The FDA had criticized Pfizer and other manufacturing companies utilizing statin drugs, for providing inadequate warnings.

Many have criticized Pfizer not only for providing a vague warning, but for also failing to disclose this fact to begin with. Before the FDA announcement, at no point before or after the plaintiff was prescribed Lipitor was she made aware of Lipitor diabetes. The defendant made no effort to notify her or her physician, nor did they provide any relevant studies.

Julie’s is one of many Americans filing legal action against Pfizer for allegedly causing them to develop type-2 diabetes. The plaintiff’s lawyers state the defendants had the civil responsibility of warning their client and other Lipitor patients of all side effects associated with their product. Julie insists that she never would have used Lipitor if she had known about the possibility of Lipitor diabetes.

So for being allegedly responsible for manufacturing, selling, distributing, and marketing a dangerous drug, Julie is suing Pfizer Inc. The charges include negligence, false advertising, concealing information, and misrepresenting a product.

This Lipitor Diabetes Lawsuit is part of the current MDL In re: Lipitor (Atorvastatin Calcium) Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2502, in the U. S. District Court of South Carolina, Charleston Division.
