Glucosamine supplement class action settlementLovaza is prescription supplement made of Omega-3-acid ethyl esters. Combined with a healthy diet and exercise regimen, Lovaza may raise “good” cholesterol (HDL) and lower high triglyceride (fat) levels.

However, Lovaza may cause subdural hematomas, especially in elderly users, but the possibility of this Lovaza side effect never made it to the warning label.

What are Omega-3s?

Omega-3s, as they’re called, are necessary fatty acids if one wants to be a healthy human being. However, the human body doesn’t produce Omega-3s, so many people have to seek other sources.

The most popular includes food sources, such as nut oils, plants and fish. Omega-3s can also be obtained from dietary supplements and the prescription drug, Lovaza.

What is Lovaza?

In 2004, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Lovaza, a highly purified and concentrated omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid preparation, as the first prescription omega-3 product for the purpose of lowering very high (greater than 500 mg/dL) triglyceride levels in adults.

Originally called Omacor, Lovaza was developed by Reliant Pharmaceuticals, which was acquired by Glaxo-SmithKline in December 2007.

High triglyceride levels are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and death, and can lead to dangerous liver disease.

Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil — especially the omega-3 called DHA — lower triglyceride levels by decreasing the production of triglycerides in the liver, and by boosting clearance of excess triglycerides from the blood.

Lovaza Risks and Side Effects

While Omega-3s like Lovaza are important, they are associated with bleeding risks, specifically subdural hemotomas, especially if someone takes three or more grams per day.

If a patient already has a bleeding disorder or takes medications, such as anticoagulants, blood thinners or drugs with a risk of bleeding, the risk from Omega-3s is even greater.

Older adults are most likely the ones to develop chronic subdural hematomas. In fact, The Journal of Neurosurgery estimates that chronic subdural hematoma will affect 60,000 U.S. patients every year by 2030 and will be the most common reason for brain surgery.

The symptoms of a subdural hematoma may take days or weeks to appear after the onset of bleeding. Age, medical conditions, medications and the size of the bleed also affect this time range.

Symptoms of Lovaza subdural hematoma can include:

  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Change in behavior
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Lethargy or excessive drowsiness
  • Weakness
  • Apathy
  • Seizures

Drug manufacturers have a legal obligation to warn users about all potential drug side effects. If it is found that GlaxoSmithKline failed in its duty to warn users about the risk of Lovaza subdural hematoma problems, the company may be held liable for damages.

If you or a loved one suffered a subdural hematoma after taking Lovaza Omega-3 fatty acid, you may have a legal claim. Filing a Lovaza lawsuit could help you recover compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages.
