Oprah KFC Coupon Class Action Settlement

By Mike Holter

Kentucky Grilled ChickenRemember the Oprah KFC coupon debacle that occurred two years ago? Well, a class action lawsuit settlement over the incident has been reached that will provide $3.99 KFC coupons, up to $15.96 per household, to anyone who can send in their original coupons from the free Kentucky Grilled Chicken promotion that went awry. Those who no longer have their original coupons can still receive up to $4 in KFC coupons from the class action settlement.

To refresh your memory, Oprah Winfrey promoted on her show a KFC coupon for a free Kentucky Grilled Chicken meal. It seemed like a good idea at the time, until the promotion went viral online and so many people downloaded the coupons and tried to use them that KFC franchises began refusing to honor the coupons. Angry KFC customers then filed a class action lawsuit over the coupon debacle entitled In Re: Kentucky Grilled Chicken Coupon Marketing & Sales Practice Litigation.

According to the KFC coupon class action lawsuit, KFC and parent company YUM! Brands violated contract law and various state consumer protection statues by not allowing coupon redemptions for the Kentucky Grilled Chicken Free Meal. Both companies deny any wrongdoing but have agreed to pay up to $1.575 million for valid claims submitted by settlement Class Members.

Individuals covered under the KFC free chicken meal class action lawsuit settlement include all persons who downloaded an original or PDF coupon between May 5 and May 6, 2009 from Oprah.com or unthinkfc.com, or who received a Raincheck Coupon or a “Chicken Check” and did not receive the Kentucky Grilled Chicken Free Meal or other compensation from KFC, or a free meal or other consideration at a restaurant unaffiliated with the Defendants that agreed to accept the Kentucky Grilled Chicken Coupons.

Under the Oprah KFC coupon class action settlement, Class Members who attach the original coupon (containing a unique bar code ending in a number other than “1234”) to a completed and signed claim form will receive $3.99 for each original coupon submitted, up to a total of $15.96 per household. Class Members who have the PDF coupon can receive $2 for each PDF coupon submitted, up to a total of $8 per household.

If you no longer have an original or PDF coupon, but complete and sign the claim form under penalty of perjury, you can still receive $1 for each KFC coupon you claim you downloaded, up to a total of $4 per household.

To receive your KFC coupons from the KFC free grilled chicken meal class action settlement, you must submit your claim forms postmarked by January 30, 2012.

At the New Albany, Ms KFC, I gave the Cashier a Coupon that was for a 16 piece meal for $32.99. My bank statement shows they charged me $51.76. I called and the manager said there was nothing they could do about it. I told her I would put it on Facebook and other Social Media pages and let everybody know and then she said just come by and they would refund me. I had previously quit going because their prices were getting outrageous, but when I got a coupon, I thought I would try it again. The month before, which was October, I ordered a 12 piece and was charged 40.86. When I got home, the chicken was tough and dry. I called and called and no one answered. I called the next day and no one answered, so I let it go, but no more. Our store needs honest management, or I will stop going and go to George’s Chicken in New Albany, Ms. I will let my community know they will be overcharged unless they ask for the amount before they pay and to make sure they get a receipt stating that amount before they leave with their order. KFC has the best tasting chicken, but their prices and service is not acceptable. I always check my bank statement to make sure no one is ripping me off. A chicken should not be this expensive. 5 years from now, a 16 piece will cost $100 if they are willing to charge me %51.76 for it in 2023. Its just a “chicken”, not a “Rib Eye” steak.

They ARE getting away with it…..how many people still have the coupons after all this time. And if you don’t have it, postage will cost you half of your refund, and the cost of printing will eat up the other half.

I’m still boycotting them from what happened. I used to eat KFC at least once a month. That was over a decade ago and haven’t had a bite since.

I love this. What made them think they could get away with turning down their own coupons?

    Justice served.
