Louis Vuitton class action settlementOver 23,000 consumers will receive Louis Vuitton Merchandise Certificates worth $41 from a class action settlement that was approved on Jan. 9, 2014.

U.S. District Judge William Q. Hayes granted final approval to the deal, resolving claims that Louis Vuitton violated California law by requesting and recording personal identification information (address, ZIP code, phone number and/or e-mail address) in conjunction with certain credit card transactions.

Louis Vuitton denies any wrongdoing but agreed to a $1 million class action settlement to resolve the litigation, which would be distributed evenly to Class Members in the form of Merchandise Certificates after the deduction of attorney fees, court costs and administration costs.

Judge  Hayes preliminarily approved the class action settlement in August 2013.

Consumers who made a credit card purchase at a California Louis Vuitton store between May 20, 2010 and Jan. 28, 2013, and were asked and provided their personal identification information in conjunction with that transaction, had until Nov. 13, 2013 to file a claim for the class action settlement.

According to Judge Hayes’ Final Approval Order, 23,876 Class Members filed valid claims by the deadline and will be receiving a $41 Merchandise Certificate.

So far the Settlement Administrator has not updated its site to confirm when these Merchandise Certificates will be mailed, except to say that it will be sometime in the spring of 2014.

The case is Deanna Morey v. Louis Vuitton North America, Case No. 3:11-cv-01517, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.

It seems that it is a win win for LV because in order to spend the certificate you will have to spend hundreds of dollars. So in reality LV will get their million dollars plus attorney’s fee back many times over if people redeem their certificates. You can’t get anything under 500.00. Plus they must have a huge mark so in actuality it probably only cost them $10.00 or less. So in the end LV will make all the money back plus much more.
