Brazilian BlowoutA California judge has granted final approval to a $4.5 million class action settlement resolving claims that the manufacturer of Brazilian Blowout failed to warn consumers that the popular hair-straightening product emits toxic formaldehyde gas, a known carcinogen, even though the product labels said it was “formaldehyde-free.”

California Superior Court Judge Elihu M. Berle signed off on the Brazilian Blowout class action settlement on Dec. 24, calling the deal “fair, reasonable and adequate.” Consumers who filed valid claims will receive a $35 payment for each Brazilian Blowout treatment they purchased, up to a total of 3 ($105). Hair stylists will receive $75 for each bottle of the product they purchased. Any Class Member who submitted proof of medical expenses incurred as a result of exposure to the formaldehyde in the Brazilian Blowout products will receive up to $2,000 in medical reimbursement.

According to the Final Approval Order, the Claims Administrator received 6,098 Consumer Claims, 1,608 Stylist Claims, and 58 Medical Reimbursement Claims, for a total of 7,764 claims that will be paid out within 30 days of the Effective Date of the class action settlement. Class Members who filed valid claims can expect to receive their settlement checks soon.

The deadline to file a claim for the Brazilian Blowout class action settlement was Sept. 23, 2013. 6. Rachel says:

Thank You, Friends. And for the updates..

Unfortunately I am concerned now, I DID NOT get an email, like you both…Was this an automated email or something like information you may have requested? I only qualified for the treatments/3 part.. (although I had more than 3 :-/) But Like I mentioned before, anything is a blessing.

I’m just worried now, reading you’ve got emails..

Did everyone get an email? Or to whom did, was it requested information or such, as to why you got emails? Sigh, I hope I wasn’t looked over…

Thank You for any follow-ups to that question.

    Rachel

Nothing in mail in Texas today. Yeah I’m confused if they go out today, or the latest by today, or? Has anyone been able to call? (Im out of minutes till the first of the month) Also, where else is there more information being found? Like that prorated info?

Thanks for everyone’s updates and information. ..

I just wish I wasn’t depending on this so bad, as times are pretty tough right now, or I’d just sit and patiently wait. Then again I guess thats all I can really do anyhow… sigh.

..oh I AM interested to learn more about any further information related to this, I did some rough math and was thinking the number of claims vs. The settlement was a little lopsided. Then again we all know the biggest paychecks always go to the lawyer’s on the case. But it would be a big blessing if this turns out to be true. :”)

    1. Sharon in Calfornia says:

GOOD NEWS! EVERYONE!!!! THE CHECKS FOR SURE WILL BE MAILED OUT MAR20 /Mar 21, I called March 5th, and spoke to an actual person, and the amount you applied for WILL BE DOUBLED, with some change!!!!
