rescue it resurfacerOlympic Rescue It! Resurfacer is a DIY product that is designed as a deck stain or resurfacer alternative. It is marketed as a resurfacer and sealant in one for wood decks that are outside of conventional restoration.

Recently claims have been investigated on behalf of customers who have used Olympic Rescue It! on their decks. The deck stain has been alleged of being prone to premature failure. When it is applied to exterior wood it may be susceptible to bubbling and/or peeling, which can lead to costly repairs and replacements.

What is Olympic Rescue It! Resurfacer?

Olympic Rescue It! Resurfacer is a hybrid between a paint and a stain, which can be applied on either concrete or wood surfaces. Rescue It! is supposed to fill in cracks, lock down splinters, and provide a textured, slip-resistant finish that is barefoot friendly.

It is advertised as a “100% acrylic, high performance coating” that provides waterproof protection and outstanding elasticity to fill wood and concrete splits and cracks – the ultimate remedy for worn or weathered wood and concrete. Olympic offers a satisfaction guarantee to customers who purchase and use Rescue It! on a surface that is prepared according to the company’s instructions.

Olympic does not provide an amount of time the product is supposed to last. It says that “the lifetime of the product may be limited by the condition of the wood or concrete that is being ‘rescued.’”

Homeowner Concerns Over Rescue It

Instead of having to restain your deck every year in order to preserve your wood, acrylic stains – or “resurfacers” as they are sometimes called – allegedly provide long-lasting protection that leaves your deck looking brand new for years to come. They may cost a bit more than traditional stains, but manufacturers swear the additional cost is more than offset by the products’ longevity and low-maintenance requirements.

Unfortunately, Rescue It! has been accused of not living up to its promises. Olympic assures customers that its resurfacer, which retails for over $40-per-gallon:

  • Is a premium-quality product with excellent resistance to blistering and peeling
  • Is ideal for restoration for lightly worn surfaces
  • Conceals hairline cracks and locks down splinters
  • Is finely textured, slip-resistant and barefoot friendly
  • Provides waterproof protection
  • Provides a dual-action mildew resistant coating
  • Works for horizontal and vertical wood and concrete surfaces
  • Is ideal for decks, porches, sidewalks and more

Many customers reportedly are satisfied with the deck stain product shortly after application. Like many other products on the market, Rescue It! supposedly goes on smooth and leaves a beautiful finish.

But consumers are reporting that Olympic Rescue It! is virtually guaranteed to fail shortly after application. Indeed, reviews that address the product’s performance in the months and years following application make clear that Rescue It! will eventually begin to crack, bubble and peel, ultimately leaving the deck looking like a mess.

Rescue It Class Action Investigation

Out of the many consumers who purchased Olympic Rescue It!, there are a large number of them experiencing utter failure of the product. Even though application instructions were followed to the letter, there is a significant report of bubbling, peeling, cracking and/or flaking within a year of application.

Reportedly, the company refuses to take responsibility of their failing product and is trying to blame the customer instead.

  2. Vicki Wilson says:

I used this product May 2014, followed instructions exactly as recommended. 6 months later was coming off in sheets. My deck is ruined and I can’t afford to replace boards, 12×26 ft., looks horrible don’t even use deck any more makes me sick to look at it! I was buying paint for another project, overheard couple discussing buying this product, I walked over and told them to please come look at my deck before purchasing! They didn’t buy Rescue It!

  3. janet deeken says:

We used this product a couple years back. We noticed right away that the product was wearing off less than a year, then the cracking and signs of soft wood under the peeling paint. We are now faced with the cost of replacing the deck due to peeling cracking and rotting boards. The cost to replace the deck is far more than we can afford.
