Many homeowners refinish or improve their wooden decks or concrete patios, a necessary chore as seasonal weather changes and use of these areas tends to wear away at the concrete and wooden surfaces, making them uneven and sometimes even dangerous to walk on. Many paint and home improvement product manufacturers now make resurfacing paints to easily fix this issue.
A popular resurfacer is Olympic Rescue It!, a “high performance coating” resurfacer product advertised by its manufacturer as the “ultimate remedy for worn or weathered wood and concrete.” Although Rescue It! is advertised as offering waterproof protection, some consumers claim the product is not hardy enough to withstand seasonal weathering, and has resulted in noticeable cracks and peels in consumers’ wood decks and concrete patios.
Background on Olympic Rescue It! Resurfacer Product
Described as a combination between a paint and a stain, the Olympic Rescue It! Resurfacer is marketed for use on both concrete and wooden surfaces. As a resurfacer product, Rescue It! is made to fill in cracks, smooth over splinters, and create a finished texture on wood and concrete, with a finish that is supposedly slip-resistant and barefoot friendly. Furthermore, Olympic advertises its Rescue It! resurfacer as a high performance, acrylic coating that is supposed to protect the surfaces from water damage. According to the manufacturer Olympic, the company offers a satisfaction guarantee to consumers who purchase their brand-name resurfacer and use it according to Olympic’s instructions. Olympic does not give a specific time frame for how long Rescue It! is supposed to last on a wooden deck or concrete patio, though it does state “the lifetime of the product may be limited by the condition of the wood or concrete that is being ‘rescued.’” This vague language as to the condition of the wood or concrete prior to using Rescue It! may seem to some consumers as an easy way to deny liability should the product not work as intended or advertised.
Olympic Rescue It! Product Complications
According to some consumers, the Olympic resurfacer failed to work as advertised, even when used on good condition wood and concrete, and when prepped and applied as specified by Olympic’s product installation instructions. Homeowners have reported that within a few months of applying the Rescue It! resurfacer, the paint-stain hybrid coat began to bubble and peel. Homeowners have had to redo their decks and patios, resulting in added and unexpected expenses. Consumers who asked Olympic for a refund generally received it after informing the company of the issues they had with the Rescue It! product. However, many customers are still unhappy, as the product was advertised as a time-saver, and instead caused them to have to redo their wooden deck or concrete patio twice, wasting both time and resources. Some of these unhappy consumers may take legal action against the manufacturer, and may choose to join an Olympic Rescue It! class action lawsuit to seek damages for this alleged misrepresentation of a product.
