Zithromax side effects

Zithromax side effects

When the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning in early 2013 that the antibiotic Zithromax has been linked to deadly heart rhythm changes, a media storm ensued. As a result, many patients scoured the Internet for advice. One patient posted on a medical advice website: “My doctor gave me Zithromax for a sinus infection and sore throat. I took the first dose, which are two capsules. Approximately 30-45 minutes later, I developed severe irregular heart beat and shortness of breath with abdominal distention. I had three bouts of diarrhea. I went to the ER. The EKG showed PVCs (premature ventricular contractions) which I have a history of; chest x-rays showed mild cardiomyopathy. … I hear on the news that Zithromax can cause the irregular heartbeats and possible death. I am so concerned that I took another one. Please advise.”

Zithromax has been associated with potentially fatal heart rhythms in patients with heart conditions. In March, the FDA warned, “Patients at particular risk for developing this condition include those with known risk factors such as existing QT interval prolongation, low blood levels of potassium or magnesium, a slower than normal heart rate, or use of certain drugs used to treat abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias.”

Anything from an ear infection to pneumonia can lead to someone being prescribed antibiotics. If a person sees a doctor who isn’t aware of their history, doesn’t ask the right questions, doesn’t perform key tests or the patient simply doesn’t know about an underlying condition, this can lead to a fatal Zithromax complication.

Heart attacks aren’t always the obvious, scary and extreme cases that are showcased on TV and in movies. Many people have full heart attacks and don’t even realize it, but that strain to the heart can lead to big complications down the road. When taking any drug, it’s important to watch for warning signs. Zithromax heart problem symptoms can range drastically. A person may experience the severe telltale signs of a heart attack, or they may simply experience an elevated heart rate, dizziness or tingling in their extremities. However, many people sense when something just isn’t “right,” and when on Zithromax these gut instincts should be trusted.
