Toyota Prius HID Headlight Class Action Settlement

By Sarah Pierce

2010 Toyota PriusGood news! The Settlement Administrator website for the Toyota Prius HID headlight class action settlement we told you about in January has finally been put up. That means we have all the information you need to file a valid claim to get an extended warranty or cash reimbursement from the settlement.

The Prius HID headlight settlement will resolve a class action lawsuit, entitled Collado, et al. v. Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., that alleges Toyota failed to warn customers that the high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights on 2006 through 2009 Priuses can sporadically turn on and off while the car is being driven, creating a safety hazard.

If you ever owned or leased a 2006-2009 Toyota Prius originally factory equipped with HID headlights, you’re considered a class member of the settlement and eligible for benefits.

As part of the Prius class action settlement, Toyota has agreed to extend its New Vehicle Limited Warranty to cover HID headlight repairs through the earlier of 5 years or 50,000 miles from the original date of purchase or lease. If your vehicle is outside the 5 year or 50,000 mile warranty period, but you can provide proof that the headlight problem began within 5 years or 50,000 miles, you will be entitled to warranty repairs. One example of proof would be a repair estimate done within the eligible period.

Class members may also be eligible to receive cash reimbursements for past HID headlight repairs. Reimbursements will fall into three categories:

(I) HID Electronic Control Units (ECUs). If you spent money repairing or replacing an HID electronic control unit (ECU) before March 1, 2011 you will be entitled to a full reimbursement (both parts and labor), provided you have not already received full reimbursement.

(II) HID Bulbs repaired or replaced within 5 years and 50,000 miles. If you spent money repairing or replacing the HID bulb(s) you will be entitled to full reimbursement (both parts and labor), provided you have not already received full reimbursement. Even if you repaired/replaced your HID bulbs after 5 years or 50,000 miles, you fall into this category if you can show proof that your HID headlights first started having problems within 5 years and 50,000 miles.

(III) HID Bulbs repaired or replaced after 5 years and 50,000 miles. If you spent money repairing or replacing the HID bulb(s) after either 5 years or 50,000 miles elapsed from the original purchase or lease date, you will not be automatically entitled to reimbursement, but should still submit a claim because you may still receive a full or partial settlement if you meet the factors listed on the back of the Claim Form.

To be eligible for a cash reimbursement you must submit a signed Claim Form and your repair records no later than May 30, 2011. Claim forms can be downloaded from the Settlement Administrator at www.HIDSettlement.com.

    Averaging 6-7 bulbs a year for the last 3 years. I own a 2011 had 54000 miles in 2020

  2. brian mocilnikarr says:

Yes , I own a 2008 Toyota Prius and have replaced headlights more in this car than I have in all the cars I’ve owned! At least 25 times! I started blaming the manufacturer of the headlights! Because Toyota is supposed to be so reliable! The manufacturer started sending me free bulbs, if the bulbs burned out before six months, which they did every single time! Ridiculous!

  3. Bobbie Spotts says:

I own a Toyota Avalon, I have been experiencing the same issues and I’ve sent Top class actions several emails regarding this company; and their faulty head lights. No one ever responds to me.

This is good news for some Toyota customers. I am still looking forward to seeing what comes out of the other class action that they are still dealing with.
