A South Carolina couple is suing Abbot Laboratories and Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, alleging complications caused by their testosterone products.

Plaintiffs Daniel and Debra J. claim in their testosterone drug lawsuit that the drug makers were fully aware of the risks revolving around AndroGel and Testim but had chose to omit this information from the products’ labels.

Like millions of patients across the United States, Daniel had been concerned about his testosterone levels lowering as he was aging. He noticed that he was exhibiting symptoms mentioned in the defendants’ advertisements, which described the side effects of depleting testosterone in his body. These signs included: irritability, weight gain, muscle loss, mood swings, fatigue, and loss of libido.

To combat these apparent problems, his physician prescribed him the low-t products, AndroGel and Testim, for testosterone replacement therapy, in July 2012, the testosterone product lawsuit explains.

However, it did not take long for him to start suffering complications, as he was only on the products for a month when he suffered from deep vein thrombosis.

Even though Daniel survived his ordeal, he still remains vigilant for any chance of recurrence, and Daniel complains that he and his wife have had their lives permanently altered from the events.

Daniel and his wife are filing the testosterone product lawsuit against the manufacturing companies, for failing to warn them against the potential complications associated with their testosterone replacement therapy products.

The testosterone drug lawsuits state that the companies had the civil responsibility of warning Daniel and other testosterone replacement therapy patients of all potential side effects of their products. Daniel insists that he never would have used AndroGel or Testim, if he had known about the risk of potential blood-clot injuries.

For being allegedly responsible for manufacturing, selling, distributing, and marketing dangerous products, Daniel and his wife are suing Abbot Laboratories and Auxilium Pharmaceuticals for negligence, false advertising, concealing information, and misrepresenting a product.

The Testosterone Product Lawsuit is filed In Re: Testosterone Replacement Therapy Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2545, in the U.S. District Court of Northern Illinois.

Overview of Low-T Heart Complications

For years, the defendants and other low-t manufacturers had claimed that their testosterone replacement therapy products could not only treat these symptoms, but could also help men maintain their testosterone levels.

However, the drug makers allegedly neglected to mention that the symptoms they described were also symptoms of aging.

While testosterone is the primary hormone responsible for secondary sexual traits and does effect sexual activity, it is a naturally occurring hormone that is very difficult to replicate.

There are concerns that there have been numerous unnecessary low-t prescriptions, which have allegedly led to the numerous allegations of testosterone cardiac complications.

Healthcare professionals have reportedly been concerned over this correlation for years, but it has not been widely discussed until recently. In the past two years, there were two significant studies that suggested that low-t products could cause blood clot complications in patients.

The study that has been most commonly mentioned in low-t lawsuits, is the 2014 study published in PLOS ONE. This study showed that young men with pre-existing heart conditions were at higher risk for blood-clot injuries, and older men were at risk regardless of whether or not they had a heart condition.

This was a follow-up study to one published in the December 2013 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, which suggested that older men with cardiac conditions were at the highest risk.
