Type 2 Diabetes Drugs Januvia, Byetta, Victoza Pancreatic Cancer Overview

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced March 14, 2013 that it is evaluating unpublished research that suggests an increased risk of pancreatitis and pre-cancerous cellular changes in patients who used Januvia, Byetta, Victoza and other type 2 diabetes drugs. The announcement follows a new study published inJAMA Internal Medicine that found type 2 diabetics treated with drugs like Januvia, Byetta and/or Victoza doubled their risk of developing acute pancreatitis.

The effect these diabetes medications have on the pancreas has been known for years, yet the manufacturers of these drugs (Merck & Co. and Bristol-Myers Squibb) have downplayed these risks and may have failed to adequately warn patients and the medical community about the risk of pancreatic cancer and thyroid cancer. As a result, a class action lawsuit investigation has been launched to find victims and their families who want to hold these drug makers liable for their injuries.

JAMA Study: Byetta, Victoza & Januvia Double Pancreatitis Risk

Researchers at Johns Hopkins found that diabetics hospitalized with pancreatitis were twice as likely to be taking Januvia, Byetta or Victoza compared to diabetics who didn’t have pancreatitis. The findings, published February 25, 2013, coincide with a 2007 FDA alert that the agency had received a high number of reports of pancreatitis in patients taking Byetta. The FDA issued a similar alert for Januvia in 2009.

Symptoms of pancreatitis include:

  • Severe upper stomach (abdomen) pain that won’t go away
  • Abdominal pain that radiates to your back
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Tenderness when touching the abdomen
  • Indigestion
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Oily, smelly stools (steatorrhea)

Type 2 Diabetes Drugs Linked to Pancreatic Cancer & Thyroid Cancer

The JAMA study supports findings from a 2011 study published in the medical journal Gastroenterology that found a 2.9-fold increase in reported cases of pancreatic cancer among patients taking Byetta and 2.7-fold increase in pancreatic cancer among Januvia users.

The study also noted an increase in reported cases of Byetta thyroid cancer.

Signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer include:

    • Upper abdominal pain that may radiate to your back
    • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
    • Loss of appetite
    • Weight loss
    • Bloating
    • Depression
    • Blood clots
    • Dark urine
    • Light-colored stools
    • Itching
    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Enlarged lymph nodes on the neck

Signs and symptoms of thyroid cancer include:

  • Lump or swelling in neck
  • Neck/throat pain
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Difficulty breathing
