  • Why: The dog food may have overly high vitamin D levels.
  • Where: The dog food recall is active in the United States.

(Feb. 13, 2023)

Nestle Purina recalled select lots of its Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental prescription dry dog food due to potentially elevated vitamin D levels after two dogs were made sick by eating the food.

The United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website posted the recall Feb. 8. It applies to Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) 8- and 20-pound bags with UPC codes 38100 19190 (8-pound bags) and 38100 19192 (20-pound bags).

According to the recall, the prescription dry dog food has potentially elevated levels of vitamin D. Ingestion of elevated levels of vitamin D can lead to health issues depending on the levels and the length of exposure, the Nestle Purina recall states.

“Vitamin D toxicity may include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, and excessive drooling to renal (kidney) dysfunction,” according to the dog food recall.

Purina initiated the recall after receiving two reports of confirmed cases of a dog exhibiting signs of vitamin D toxicity after consuming the food. Once taken off the food, each of the dogs recovered, the company says.

Purina is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental distributed nationwide, dog food recall states

The affected dry dog food was distributed throughout the United States by prescription only through veterinary clinics, Purina Vet Direct, Purina for Professionals and other select retailers with the ability to validate a prescription, the Nestle Purina recall states.

Nestle Purina advises pet owners who purchased bags of the recalled Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental to immediately stop feeding it to their dogs and throw it away in a container where no other animals, including wildlife, can get to it.

If signs such as weight loss, excessive drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite or increased thirst or urination occurred in their dog while eating this diet, pet owners should contact their vet, according to the dog food recall

Vets should remove and destroy the affected product from their inventory.

In related news, Nestle Purina recalled some of its prescription wet dog food in December as the cans were incorrectly packaged with a different product.

I absolutely believe this is not a case being shouted loud enough for pet parents to have as common knowledge; because, I KNOW the green bag of beniful took my Lou away from me in an agonizing 3 weeks of the most heartbreaking downfall that i could only realize was happening BECAUSE I lost her. It was the day after I buried my mealtime alpha, that two of my other 3 began to fall in line with loulou at an alarming speed to it. No doubt did I pull up the food within days of my whole pack Damnnnnn near gone, and I could see the life coming back in their eyes again. Beniful took my Loulou and Tommy hilfinger took my beautiful little 4 year old, my spirit animal, my farmiliar. It’s hard to sleep when you no longer know if everyone’s gonna wake up in the morning. Esp when you keep the guilt right beside their memories, on the shelf with her ashes and in the yard under the cross you built and decorated.

FYI-deodorant, Even the last of the stick that falls out and breaks apart- it has an incredibly horrific and agonizing, unforgettable and utterly DEVASTATING, tragic,- tragic – and very raw consequence when ingested by them as well. And that is just the way I felt to watch her leave me on that bloody day in sept of last year.

I’ve been feeding my dogs Beneful weight control. Is this part of the recall?

  4. Christina Karn says:

I wonder if this is why my dog lost over 30lbs and since I’ve switched her to pedigree she has started gaining her weight slowly back. She was also having seizures before now it’s only once in awhile. She was lethargic and drooling and never has. She was one sick puppy. I was scared.
