2021-22 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Recall Overview:

  • Who: FCA US is recalling certain 2021-2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles.
  • Why: A missing weld in the 4,586 affected vehicles may allow the child seat tether to separate from the seat frame during a crash.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

A missing piece of welding intended to secure child seats has prompted a recall of more than 4,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles.

FCA US announced Mar. 24 on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website that it is recalling certain 2021-2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles.

The recall applies to 4,586 vehicles and is being issued because the Jeeps may have been built with a missing weld from the seat back frame to the child seat tether anchorage.

“A missing weld may allow the child seat tether to separate from the seat frame during a crash…a tether anchorage separating completely from the vehicle seat may increase the risk of injury to the occupant of the child seat in a crash,” the recall notice says.

As such, the vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard for child restraint anchorage systems.

FCA To Offer Free Seat Frame Replacements for Affected Jeeps

FCA said that those with the affected Jeeps will get notification letters about the issue in May, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the second-row seat back frame free of charge.

The company said the issue likely began Oct. 13, 2021, when the first vehicle was produced with a missing weld or welds, and ended on Feb. 2, 2022, when sort procedures were implemented in vehicle production.

“Supplier and vehicle production and traceability records were used to identify the suspect period and specific vehicles,” FCA said. “Similar vehicles not included in this recall were built before or after the suspect period, have completed welds on the seat back frame or were repaired prior to release from the production plant.”

It said those who have already fixed the problem can be reimbursed.

“FCA US has a longstanding policy and practice of reimbursing owners who have incurred the cost of repairing a problem that subsequently becomes the subject of a field action,” the company said. “To ensure consistency, FCA US, as part of the owner letter, will request that customers send the original receipt and/or other adequate proof of payment to the company for confirmation of the expense.”

In 2019, Fiat Chrysler agreed to pay more than $300 million to resolve class action claims that the company cheated emissions regulations in its 2014-2016 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel or 2014-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel vehicles.
