With Thanksgiving just around the corner, meal prep is well and truly underway — but shoppers need to be wary of one key ingredient on their shopping list: onions.
Over the past month, six companies have issued voluntary recalls of whole onions — a key ingredient in stuffing and many side dishes — over fears of salmonella contamination.
Alsum Farms & Produce, Green Giant Fresh, Green Giant, Pier-C Produce, HelloFresh, EveryPlate, and MVP have all recalled some of their onions that were tied to a national recall of onions supplied by ProSource Produce LLC and Keeler Family Farms, which were imported from Chihuahua, Mexico, between July 1, 2021, and August 31, 2021.
ProSource packaged the onions in mesh sacks that ranged between 50 pounds and two pounds and in cartons ranging in size from 50 pounds to five pounds. Keeler Family Farms onions were distributed in 25-50 pound mesh sacks.
The onions have been linked to a salmonella outbreak that has left 894 people ill and 183 hospitalized across 38 states and in Puerto Rico, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The outbreak was first linked to the onions in October, when investigators discovered all of the salmonella cases were associated with restaurants and food service locations where the onions were served raw. State officials collected food products from some of the restaurants where sick people ate and found a sample of the disease in a takeout condiment cup containing cilantro, lime, and onion.
The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers, retailers, and restaurants to stop eating, serving, or selling any products that contain the affected onions, which include jumbo, colossal, medium, summer, and sweet, and to throw out any whole onions consumers don’t know the origins of.
The CDC estimates that salmonella bacteria causes around 1.35 million infections in the US each year, leading to approximately 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths.
Symptoms, including fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, commonly begin within six hours to six days of infection and can last for between four to seven days, according to the CDC, which says most people are able to recover without the use of antibiotics.
Top Class Actions will continue to monitor the onion recall and related food safety issues.
