Nestlé Purina PetCare Company and Waggin’ Train, LLC have agreed to a $586,000 class action lawsuit settlement over claims they sold Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch dog treats that were contaminated, allegedly causing numerous pets to fall ill and/or die.

Pet owners who purchased these products may be eligible to claim up to $300 if they file a valid claim and the class action settlement is approved.

This dog treat settlement affects Missouri residents only. A separate $6.5 million nationwide class action settlement affects all other consumers.

The proposed Missouri dog treat settlement resolves a class action lawsuit pending in the Circuit Court of Jackson County, Missouri (Curts v. Waggin Train, LLC, et al.) that alleges the defendants sold “worthless” dog treat products that were worth less than the purchase price because they were allegedly contaminated or defective.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been warning consumers since 2007 about growing reports of pets falling ill after consuming jerky treats made in China. According to the FDA, the illness affects the kidneys, and symptoms include decreased activity, vomiting, diarrhea and increased water consumption and urination.

Following the warning, multiple class action lawsuits were filed against numerous manufacturers of Chinese-made dog treats, including Nestlé Purina, Waggin’ Train and big box retailers.

Nestlé Purina and Waggin’ Train have denied any wrongdoing but agreed to settle three class action lawsuits just two weeks after the FDA announced that Chinese-made jerky treats had been linked to the deaths of more than 1,000 dogs.

Top Class Actions has been extensively covering the Chinese jerky treat class action lawsuits for several years: Purina Waggin’ Train Dog Treat Class Action lawsuit to Proceed, Waggin’ Train Dog Treat Class Action Lawsuit, Milo’s Kitchen Chicken Jerky Dog Treats Class Action Lawsuit, Second Milo’s Kitchen Chicken Jerky Dog Treats Class Action Lawsuit Filed, Dog Died From Waggin’ Train Dog Treats, Class Action Says.
