A federal judge has approved a class action lawsuit settlement between Gentek Building Products Inc. and customers who say the company failed to honor its warranty on defective steel siding products.
In a decision issued August 1, 2013, U.S. District Judge Benita Y. Pearson granted final approval to the Gentek steel siding settlement, which will require Gentek to fully repair damage caused by defective siding within 18 months of a warranty claim. If Gentek fails to do so within that period or the siding fails after the second renovation attempt, homeowners can apply for either another attempt or request a one-time payment of $8,000.
Who’s Eligible
Class Members of the Gentek class action settlement include all persons, organizations, municipalities, corporations and entities that own property, whether commercial or residential, on which Gentek steel siding was applied during the period January 1, 1991 through March 15, 2013, that are covered by a Gentek steel siding warranty and which siding experienced Steel Peel.
Potential Award
Up to 2 free repairs or a one-time payment of $8,000.
Proof of Purchase
None.
Claim Form Deadline
There is no claims filing process, but you must request a repair within the original warranty period for the Gentek steel siding you’re experiencing problems with.
You may make a warranty claim under the Settlement if your Gentek Steel Siding is experiencing Steel Peel and you are still covered by the warranty applicable to your Siding. In submitting the warranty claim you must send Gentek’s Self-Inspection Report, as well as valid proof that you have Gentek Steel Siding. Deadlines vary according to your individual situation.
Case Name
Eliason, et al. v. Gentek Building Products Inc., and Associated Materials, Inc., Case No. 10-cv-2093, U.S. District Court, Northern District Court of Ohio
Case Summary
The Gentek Steel Siding settlement will resolve a class action lawsuit (Eliason, et al. v. Gentek Building Products Inc., and Associated Materials Inc.) that alleges Gentek failed to honor its Limited Lifetime Warranty at the point of sale and the implied warranty of merchantability on defective Steel Siding products. These alleged defects are characterized by the separation of any layer of the finish on the Steel Siding from the siding itself, including: delamination, chipping, peeling, cracking and/or micro-cracking, blistering and/or flaking.
Gentek and Associated Materials deny the allegations but have agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve the litigation.
The siding affected by the class action settlement includes any Gentek Steel Siding manufactured from January 1, 1991 through March 15, 2013 and sold under the brand names Alside, Gentek, Revere, Alcan, and Reynolds, and under at least the following product names: SteelTek, SteelSide Steel, Driftwood Steel, Universal Steel, Saddlewood, Satinwood, Willow, Westwood, Aspen, Sequoia, Americut, Cedarwood, Supergard, Seamless, Reynolds Continuum, Reynolds Craftmark, and Penna-Finish.
Under the proposed class action lawsuit settlement, Class Members will be eligible for a number of benefits, including:
- Enhanced warranty benefits.
- For the first two times a valid warranty claim is submitted for the same face, Gentek will offer to repair or replace the siding for free OR offer a cash settlement equal to the cost of this selected option, in lieu of repair or replacement.
- If the face peels a third time, the Class Member may choose to have Gentek either refinish or replace the face, or may elect to receive a one-time $8,000 payment. Choosing the one-time cash payment will absolve Gentek of any future warranty obligations.
To qualify for either replacement siding, repairs to existing siding or a payment, you must submit valid proof of purchase as well as Gentek’s Self Inspection Report, and attach all of the documentation it requests. You can obtain a copy of Gentek’s Self Inspection Report by:
- calling this toll-free number: 1-888-267-7910
- writing to: Gentek Siding Administrator, P.O. Box 8060, San Rafael CA 94912-8060

We decided to go with steel siding because they said it would last a lifetime and it was a 50 year warranty, I have tried for three years to get someone to come look at our home or I would send a picture. The phone is disconnected so no one will talk to or return an email. Our tan steel siding is peeling and is down to the aluminum through the home. I wish I would of went with our original plan of a log home! We are going to consult with our Lawyer next! We all should not be treated like this or go through this. Very dishonest of them!

Oct. ’98 purchased Universal Steel siding($12,050. dollars) from Arkansas Steel siding Company of Conway, AR. They installed it themselves. Two or three years ago we noticed on one end of the house the eve’s siding has began to peel badly. We were given the impression that the steel siding had a life time warranty. Could you aid us in the search on how to go about having it replaced or repaired. We have the contract papers still in our file.
I need help with the same thing
